Fool's Gold

Fool’s Gold is a thesis short film written, directed, and edited by Vidhu Kota. Developed over two years, followed by six months of post-production and a year on the festival circuit, the film marks a defining chapter in his journey as a filmmaker.

At its center is Anu, a sculptor driven by insecurity and the need to prove himself. What begins as artistic ambition slowly mutates into obsession. Lies compound. Validation becomes currency. Success turns into a shield against the fear of being ordinary. As the façade grows heavier, the truth begins to fracture the very dream he’s built.

Set against the backdrop of New York City, the film mirrors the internal pressure cooker of striving and expectation. The city’s relentless pace reflects Anu’s own unraveling. Family doubt, social comparison, and the weight of creative survival shape his descent. Yet beneath the collapse lies something quieter — a return to creation for its own sake.

This film is not about glamour or achievement. It is about insecurity. About the fragile space between passion and ego. About the moment you realise that external validation cannot replace internal belief.

For Vidhu, Fool’s Gold is more than a student film. It is proof that the dream he held at twelve years old could materialise through discipline and persistence. It stands as a whispered prayer for anyone holding onto an impractical calling, trying to make something real in a world that constantly questions its worth.

A story of hope and heartbreak, illusion and clarity, Fool’s Gold ultimately argues that art is not a ladder to climb, but a mirror to confront.
